As the weather warms up, it’s time to fill up those weekends in the great outdoors.
Whether you have a group of friends ready to go or are looking to make a new one, tennis is a great way to get outside and get fit at the same time. Borrow a racket or buy one from Rebel Sports, and just get started. Here are some courts all around Toowoomba that you can hire, including a few community freebies.
Toowoomba Regional Tennis Centre
Run by the USQ Student Guild, the Tennis Centre includes 12 outdoor courts with plenty of lighting. There are two competition fixtures, one on a Monday night and one on a Thursday night. These work out to be approximately $6/night, and you can play as a single or double. If you’d rather play tennis casually, you can sign up for a membership, which means you can play unlimited games for less than $10/week.
Where: The Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre, Darling Heights (opposite USQ)
Cost: $10/week for a one off visit.

toowoomba tennis association
The professional centre has nine synthetic grass courts, all with lights, as well as a club house, change rooms and shop. There is also plenty of coaching options available, as well as a ball machine for practice. The Association hosts night fixtures in the evenings from Monday to Thursday.
Where: 41 Water Street, City (on the corner of James Street, opposite the PCYC)
Cost: Yearly membership, contact the club for pricing.

holy name tennis club
Formed in 1920, this is one of the oldest tennis clubs in Toowoomba. Available for hire at day ($12) or night ($15), the well-lit courts are well-loved and busy. There’s a dozen or so social games you can join each week, or book ahead for your crew. Make a day of it, and hire the BBQ too.
Where: 32 West Street, Newtown
Cost: $12 - $15

groom park
This community park includes two bitumen tennis courts, as well as basketball courts, learn-to-ride paths, a beach volleyball court, a playground and a two-sided ball rebound wall. Basically, it’s a sports-lovers dream! Everything is free to use, but can be busy on the weekends. Bring a picnic and wait your turn.

glenvale park
Another recreation freebie, Glenvale Park has a multi-purpose court (for tennis or basketball) with coin-operated lighting, as well as cricket practice wickets and a shade-covered playground. A gazebo with picnic facilities and barbecues and a learn-to-ride bike course made this a very popular weekend option for families.

Cost: Free!
