Fun Fitness Activities to Kick-start those Spring goals

Because sometimes, fun is the best motivation.

04 October 2024

If you’re ready to kick-start your Spring fitness journey with activities that feel more like play than a workout, we hear you! (having fun really is the best motivation). Luckily, Toowoomba is packed with fitness options that bring a little extra joy to your sweat sesh. From the adrenaline of rock climbing to the groove of line dancing, here’s your guide to getting fit while having fun this Spring!

1) Pickleball

Pickleball is sweeping across the fitness scene and is currently heralded as the fastest growing sport in the world. A mash-up of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, it’s fast-paced, easy to pick up, and insanely fun, so get yourself on the court and discover why this hybrid game is so addictive. In Toowoomba we’re spoilt for choice, with Pickleball played at the Action Indoor Sports Toowoomba, Clive Berghofer Recreational Centre and at the PCYC, who regularly hosts beginner social nights.

2) Rock Climbing

Toowoomba’s brand-new Urban Climb bouldering gym officially opens its doors Oct-12. Whether you’re a bouldering pro or new to the climbing scene, this is a killer way to build strength, improve your balance, and have a blast doing it. Grab your friends, lace up your climbing shoes, and get ready to scale those walls. Keen to tackle the great outdoors instead? check out our recent article on the broader rockclimbing scene locally, and how to get involved here.

3) Line Dancing

Switch up your cardio routine and boot-scoot into the world of line dancing. Perfect for all ages, line dancing is not only a great way to work up a sweat, but it also brings in the fun factor with catchy tunes and a social atmosphere. Toowoomba Line Dancing & Aberfeldy Barn host classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for all skill levels, so grab your boots and get in step.

4) Abseiling

What goes up, must come down and for the thrill-seekers out there, abseiling offers a heart-pumping workout with an epic view to match. Take the leap (literally) and challenge yourself to new heights in the local ranges around Toowoomba with local Abseiling adventurers Escarpment Escapes . It’s the perfect mix of adrenaline, strength training, and fresh air. If you’re ready to conquer your fear of heights, this one’s for you.

5) Squash

Nothing says full-body workout like a fast-paced game of squash (if you’ve ever played, you’ll know what we mean). Locally, you can still rally with friends or join a local competition through Toowoomba Squash who operate out of the Breakthrough Centre (formerly the Blake Street Courts) . It’s a great way to improve cardio, agility, and coordination—all while having way too much fun to realize you’re working out.

6) AQUA Aerobics

Keen for the pool but not so keen on throwing laps? Dive into something a little different with water aerobics. This low-impact workout is perfect for anyone looking to improve endurance and strength without putting too much strain on their joints. Not just for seniors, Aqua Aerobics is a heck of a lot of fun, and feels way less like exercise than it should, given the full body aerobic workout. Both Milne Bay & Darren Lange Aquatic Centres offer classes throughout the week.

7) SOCIAL Netball

Nothing brings a team together like netball (and not many things get your heart pumping quite so high either). Whether you’re joining a social league or sharpening your skills, netball offers an excellent cardio workout while feeding that competitive spirit. Plus, with its fast pace and friendly atmosphere, it’s hard not to have a good time on the court. Action Indoor Sports Toowoomba has a Tuesday night social comp, and the Clive Berghofer Recreational Centre a Monday evening comp, both with seasons that run periodically throughout the year.

8) POLE

Perhaps controvertial, but long gone are the stereotypes with this one, as are its other associations. These days, pole fitness is a mainstream workout that combines strength, flexibility, and fun. Keen to flip your fitness routine upside down—literally? Pole fitness offers an exhilarating way to build strength and flexibility while having a blast. From beginner-friendly spins to advanced tricks, studios like Toowoomba Pole Fitness provide fun, welcoming environments for all skill levels.

9) Frisbee Golf

Yes, believe it or not, frisbee (disc) golf is a thing! In fact, we have our own course and annual championish.
Similar to traditional golf, Frisbee golf is a light cardio workout where instead of hitting a ball into a hole, players throw a disc (Frisbee) towards a metal basket. It’s a game of strategy and precision, while keeping the fun, social vibe going. Toowoomba’s Frisbee Golf course is at Black Gully Reserve, and for those keen to give it a try, you can contact the Club via their Facebook page here.

10) parkrun

Whilst for many the idea of running falls far from the ‘fun’ category spruiked above; there is definitely something about Parkrun and meeting together with hundreds of other like-minded people that brings with it an energy and excitment that’ll soon have you forgetting why it was you disliked it. This free 5km walk/run is perfect for people of all fitness and enthusiasm levels. Run by volunteers, you have the option to time your runs/walks to give you a measurement to improve by. Or you can just go for a beautiful walk with your family.

The Queens Park run is the most popular, held each Saturday from 7am, and people come from all over town to participate. But there is also a parkrun in Middle Ridge/South Toowoomba and Highfields. Register here.

You can then wander over to the Cobb + Co Markets to pick up some fresh produce, or refuel at Burrow.
